Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis): Marshmallow’s soothing and healing effects have been an integral part of treatment for conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux, hiatal hernias, cystitis and renal colic from kidney stones for many centuries. It’s functions help with tooth aches and digestive upsets. Marshmallow contains large amounts of acidic polysaccharides that form mucilage and it is this substance that accounts for much of its soothing, anti-inflammatory effects. Marshmallow has anti-inflammatory functions superior to some corticoid drugs. Effects of Marshmallow root are similar to that of Slippery Elm Bark, though Marshmallow is faster growing and re-establishes more readily after harvesting than Slippery Elm, so providing a more sustainable alternative.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare): Fennel is used for relieving digestive discomfort, to improve appetite, reduce flatulence and bloating, belching, nausea and heartburn.
Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria): Meadowsweet has long been used to help soothe and heal damage to the gut wall, treat gastric ulcers and reflux. It is used to calm down an overactive digestive system. Meadowsweet also has a traditional reputation for treating urinary stones, rheumatism, liver disorders, excess gas and bad breath. Meadowsweet is also a strong anti-inflammatory herb.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita): Peppermint is used to assist a wide variety of digestive disorders where a mildly sedative and anti-cramping remedy is required, including colitis, travel sickness, excess gas, colic, nausea, vomiting and poor appetite.
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita): Chamomile is able to relieve intestinal cramping and at the same time induce relaxation. It can be very good for digestive disturbances from infant colic to adult indigestion and anything in between. It is used to as an anti-inflammatory to reduce heat and swelling internally.
Gentian (Gentiana lutea): Gentian has been very widely used in herbal medicine for people who have chronic health troubles where a weakened digestion is involved. It makes heavy foods easier to digest by stimulating gastric juice secretion and stomach motility and by improving the muscle tone of the stomach. Gentian is arguably our most valuable bitter tonic. It supports digestive function around food allergies and intolerances, liver congestion and jaundice, uncontrollable sugar cravings, lack of appetite, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Peppermint was found to reduce the absorption of iron, so it is best avoided taken at the same time of day as taking iron supplements.
